Season 61 update (Feb 2026)
And we are back down to Division 3... This time we lost on the promotion playoffs after finishing the season in 12th place.
Probably we ended up getting relegated because of the efforts on the cups. We did end up in a respectable 8th place in the SESL Cup. But thinking now about it it was probably not worth it. But here we are and looking forward to building a more competitive team!
Forfar is a "small" team but always willing to put a good fight on every match. We will see how it pans out, but we are hopeful.
Season 60 update (Oct 2025)
And we are back up on Division 2!! We did not see that coming at the start of the season, but then we had a great run towards the end of the season and ended up securing 4th place with a match to go (technically not, but we would have needed to lose and by double digits to drop from 4th place).
In the cups we did fairly well for a Division 3 team, still can't make myself give them up to have a better chance in the league.
Our roster looks pretty good but we are only hoping to avoid relegation this season. Cups? We will try as always...
Season 59 update (May 2025)
The last season for Forfar Athletic was another one to forget...
After dropping back to Div 3 we then only managed a 9th place. And that was only after a great late run that saw us run away from the Wooden Spoon. And we were just a couple of points from the bottom with a handful of matches to go.
Season 57 update (Jul 2024)
The seesaw continues for Forfar Athletic and after missing the promotion playoffs on the last match last season we then managed a very strong last stretch of the season this time and secured direct promotion even before the last match was played!
Season 56 update (Mar 2024)
Forfar Athletic has had a somewhat fair season even if some numbers don't show it.
On the players end of things we've got Matthew Aitken, the former captain is going to retire on the first cash-for-oldies window and he will be leaving as the player with the most caps and minutes played; 2nd in all times goals and 3rd in MoMs (and best non-GK at that!).
Season 55 update (Nov 2023)
Forfar Athletic has completed another Div1~Div2~Div3 cycle and this time our fall from Div-1 to Div-3 was heavier than the last time.
FOR's positions were 14th, 14th and 12th in the last 3 seasons in Div 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Not good!
Season 54 update (Jun 2023)
And we are back in Div-3... There should be a name for this: take a team from Div-3 to Div-1 and then drop all the way down to Div-3 again!
Well, we have done it twice already since taking the helm at FOR.
Season 53 update (Jan 2023)
Wow! We have managed Forfar for 10 seasons already!
We took the team in Div-3, made it to Div-1, could not last more than a season and dropped all the way back to Div-3 again. We then managed to do it again! Took the team again to Div-1 and... again we could not avoid relegation and are back in Div-2 now.
Season 52 update (Sep 2022) We got promoted again!
Season 51 update (April 2022) ~ We got promoted!
Season 49 update (July 2021) ~ We ended in 7th place, only missing the promotion playoffs on the very last session of the season.
We made it to the semis of the SESL Cup! And taking down some high-flyers in the process!
Season 48 update (Mar 2021) ~ Forfar's free fall continued through the season and we now are back in Div-3.
Season 47 update (Sep 2020) ~ Forfar made it to Div 1 but got there at a high cost and we could not avoid relegation.
Season 46 update (May 2020)
We took the reins of the team when it was already on the way down to Div-3. As Simon pointed out the squad looked pretty good for a bounce back.
But on season 42 we paid too much attention to the Cups and missed on promotion. But we made it to both Cups' semis!
On season 43 we ended in 2nd place and promoted to Div-2!
On season 44 we ended in 5th place and lost the playoff match. That with a poor showing on the Cups made up for a pretty bad season.
So season 45 we looked good all season staying in 4th place for most of the season and losing a lot of points towards the end of the season but still managed to end again in 5th place and this time winning the promotion playoff! All this while making it again to the semis of the Cecil Cup. This season felt much better. But we look spent for this coming season and now we made it to Div-1!
Season 42 updated Oct 2018
Willy takes over Forfar!

Season 61 update (February 2026)
And hello from snowy Connecticut! We've lived in the US now for 30 years and have not experienced a colder winter.
We have a good foot of snow on the ground since Dec-27! (Today is Feb-19!). We went through a spell of 3 full weeks where the temperature never got above freezing. And with a few sets of 3-4 days in a row where it was down to -20C.
It does seem like the worst of the cold is over now. Must say that the snow covering the house helps a lot with insulating it!
Something that I wanted to touch on is FOR-RL related: last season we retired our star FW Cascarilla Morales. He was a Nacional (Uruguay) glory that passed away a couple of years ago. He was part of the Nacional team that won the Intercontinental Cup in 1980 (first time that was played on only one match in Tokyo, Forest's fans might recall... ;). He was also part of the Uruguayan national team that ended in 4th place in the 1970 WC.
He retires from FOR as the player with the most seasons, appearances, minutes played, shots and goals!
Season 60 update (October 2025)
Wow, reading through these updates is like reading back on my diary (that I don't write... :).
Life has it's ups and downs and I'm really enjoying an "up" right now. Things going well on every aspect of life, maybe I could use more time to work on the (very old) house project, but it is slowly coming along, so I'm not complaining.
Next is to (finally) really focus on preparing the house for the Winter.
Season 59 update (May 2025)
Skipped last season, things on the home front weren't too shiny (only financial, so I will not complain!). There is a much better outlook now in the near future, so it motivated me to add an update. (Plus the club really needs it if we want to be competitive this season! ;)
Amazed to see that it has been 5 years since the last of these updates! Our youngest grew over a foot! The middle one finished university and is now moved from Boston to NYC (yes, I probably put more sweat on that move than he had... :)
Now looking forward to the WC coming to the US next year! It would take quite an impossible dissaster for Uruguay not to make it at this point. Curious to see how the WC will look like with so many countries qualifying to the tournament. A little bummed with the release of the ticket prices...
Season 57 update (July 2024)
So the Copa America has been played and was pretty excited for Uruguay's chances, but we stumbled upon Colombia again...
A personal historic event happened recently since the notes below were written: went to see Suarez and Messi play near here at Foxboro Stadium!
The game was very entertaining and Messi and Suarez were incredible. Messi scored 2 goals and had the 2 assists on a 1-4 win, and the last goal by Suarez was a beauty!!! The ambiance at the stadium was amazing, MLS soccer may not be as good as European or South American football, but they are trying hard to make it a very good family entertainment. I've never seen so many kids at a major sporting event and it was very nice to see the whole stadium celebrate the Messi goals, even the New England Revolution fans celebrated Messi's goals!
On the personal side the family is all good, the second kid now graduated from the university and is spending the Summer at home before moving to NYC!
House projects (originally built in 1788!) are coming along slowly (but surely), we did have a setback where a huge branch (as thick as a big tree) fell on our barn. And right over the chicken coop! The chickens are okay, and it took a few weeks to first cut the tree to make it fall off the barn and then repair the damaged roof rafters and replace the roof. I must say that it looks great now and that I did it all by myself!
Season 56 update (Mar 2024)
So the Copa America and the next WC are coming to the US (and Mexico and Canada). Excited to have a chance to go to some games! Uruguay plays Bolivia in NYC, so we hope to go to that one at least!
We may be getting old but can still do it! Luis Suarez got 2 goals and 3 assists (I count the first Messi goal as an assist from Suarez!) on a 5-0 win for his new team. Meanwhile in Argentina Cavani scores a hattrick on a 3-2 Boca win! So while Uruguay has some exciting new players coming up (even if Darwin is the starter and Suarez the sub, I still see them the other way around...) we still have our older super-stars in "National Team" shape.
But... I'm actually pretty excited that my daughter got me tickets to see Messi-Suarez and Co this coming April when they come to Foxboro! Funny that the last MLS game I went to see happened to be New England Revolution vs Inter Miami! Tickets to that game were under $50. Now they are 10 times more expensive!!! The Messi effect...
Season 55 update (Nov 2023)
Have to talk about Uruguay again! (Yes, I've lived in the US as many years as in Uruguay by now, but you can't rip the celeste (sky blue) out of me!)
Uruguay is playing already for the qualifiers for the next World Cup to be played in the US, Canada and Mexico in 2026. And we just managed to beat Brazil and Argentina on epic back to back matches (both scores 2-0!). We all were reluctant to accept a foreign coach for our national team, but Bielsa has shut everyone with a play attitude that is really working!
Most Uruguayans are mad however because we realize that under the previous coach (that was always too conservative in the play...) we had the best crop of players in a long time (maybe ever), and our results were not the best as of late. Our 4th place in the 2010 WC and winning the Copa America in 2011 were really great achievements, but granted the coach a stay in the job that went too long...
As far as the 2030 WC I'm sad to see that it didn't go to Uruguay (with Argentina as co-host). Would have been the best fit for the 100th year annyversary of the first WC. But I understand that Spain-Portugal-Morrocco is a more fair pick since Europe has not had a WC in quite some time (I almost don't count Russia's WC as a European host...). Still Uruguay is getting the inaugural match for 2030! (Which also means we've qualified already!). Not sure I follow why they gave Argentina and Paraguay also their opening matches (and automatic qualification).
Season 54 update (Jun 2023)
Have to talk about Uruguay! Even if the U-20 World Cup does not carry as much relevance as the World Cup, winning it is a very big deal.
And Uruguay won it's first U-20 World Cup recently! Have to say that I've enjoyed it very much and that it was very impressive how the youngsters played.
The last 3 matches (including the final) were completely dominated by Uruguay and the low scores did not reflect the way that the matches went.
The only match where we did not dominate was the 2nd match of the group stage, where we were beaten by England 3-2. But after that it was all Uruguay!
Wondering how it is very often that teams that win a World Cup always seem to lose at least one game that "wakes them up"...
Season 53 update (Jan 2023)
Still in Connecticut and slowly (all DIY) updating and remodeling our 1788 house (that's the year that the US Constitution was ratified!).
Enjoying very much being able to work full time remotely. I just could not imagine going to work at an office every day anymore!
Back to Connecticut, here is a bit of it's history:
The word "Connecticut" is a French corruption of the Algonkian word quinetucket, which means "beside the long, tidal river". Reverend Thomas Hooker and the Rev. Samuel Stone led a group of about 100 who, in 1636, founded the settlement of Hartford, named for Stone's place of birth: Hertford, in England.
Connecticut is one of the original 13 colonies that became the US, and was founded as a state in... 1788!
So I'm not sure how much of the house is original anymore, but it has been here since Connecticut became a state.
I know, this is only recent history compared to Scotland... :)
Season 52 update (Sep 2022)
Next thing you know you are writing one of these again! Can't believe that it's been 2 1/2 years since we came back to SESL.
So, trying to not be too repetitive, we've enjoyed the deck this Summer very much!
But there is something else that I've been enjoying a lot and was not expected: Luis Suarez is back at Nacional!!!
...and he just scored a great goal on the main derby match in Uruguay! What a great match (if you are a fan of Nacional!), a great 3-1 win that gives the "Tricolores" a great chance to win the Championship and leaves Peñarol almost with nothing to play for for the rest of the season...
But the joy with football continues: we have the World Cup in just a short 2+ months!!! (Sad to see that Scotland didn't make it...)
One of my boys is spending a semester in Valencia, so will see if I can make it there and catch a Cavani match! (He just joined Valencia CF!)
Cheers!
Season 51 update (April 2022)
Can we finally call this pandemic over?? Life is almost feeling like back to normal, with still lots of people wearing masks, and us still weary about attending crowded events. At home not much changed since the last update, I did finish the deck! Now that Spring will eventually come (this morning it was barely over freezing!) we are hoping to enjoy it a lot!
Plenty more projects to go on our fairly old (built in 1788!) house... :). Lately we are finishing a walk-in closet in a section of the attic that was not even accessible! Hope to have much more by the next update (making a bath out of a half bath and redoing a whole bedroom, then redoing the main bathroom.
I actually, just this last weekend, I made myself a desk with a very (very!) old board that I found in the attic. Very happy with the result and much more comfortable for work (I work full time from home now!).
My next goal is to get in shape to go back to playing some "indoor soccer"! First need to get in running shape, quite the task at my age, but we'll get there. Lost my first 9 pounds in the last month of the many more gained since COVID started...
Season 50 update (December 2021)
So in one year and 9 months I've gone to the office/warehouses 3 times! The nice thing about working in IT is that you barely need to be at your job to do your job. And it's official, I've been allowed to stay working remotely permanently.
This is a good thing because since my last post my office moved 40 minutes away from me (and I already moved an hour away before that!), so commuting would not have been viable anyway...
The college boy is back in school, the youngest is doing great with homeschooling and the oldest is still going to work from home for at least another SESL season!
House renovations still going but slow. Still "almost" done with the new deck, hope to finish it this weekend! (Looks great if I may say so myself...)
Went to my 2nd MLS game after almost 20 years! In 2002 we went to watch a Columbus Crew match in Columbus, Ohio with Mike Morton (SFLSL founder), Ricardo Rio (came from Portugal with his then girlfriend, now wife and mother of their 3 girls!), Nuno Gomes (I think he was living in Philadelphia at the time) and Chris Criswell (a German that lived in Memphis, Tennessee). This time went to see the New England Revolution playing in the New England Patriots stadium outside of Boston. Must say, it was fun!
Season 49 update (July 2021)
How many of these updates are we going to write while the COVID-19 pandemic is still affecting our everyday lives...?
All kids still at home, working, remote-learning and home-schooling...
We now have chickens to tend to and happy to report that we haven't bought an egg since the last update!
Today I finished an outdoors enclosure for the chickens, so they feel like they are out and about. (Can't let them roam free because we have foxes and falcons in the area that prey on chickens!)
House renovation going slower than expected, but I did finish the kitchen!
Season 48 update (Mar 2021)
Six months later and we are still all at home and still loving it. This pandemic has been terrible but we have managed to make the most out of it. Still we got hit really hard with the loss of my mother-in-law back in December. Not directly from the virus but very related, as the lack of going out and exercising and the solitude over such an extended time finally managed to deteriorate her heart to the point of failure. Sad to see a twice-cancer survivor not make it past this new reality. This was unexpected, so it hit us really hard.
Hopeful that we are all finally beating this thing, but these loses are hard.
Still enjoying this game very much. Like Dave often pointed out on his (great!) match commentaries, we always jump on the virtual pitch with a competitive attitude. We often were very close to better results, and got hit quite a few times with late goals against us that dramatically changed our end results.
Busy with (remote) work and renovating our new old house (built in 1788!), so I'm only playing SESL and SFLSL these days...
Season 47 update (Sep 2020)
Aren't we living in a different World this time!
Kids moved back home and we are having a blast! Not missing much of the old "normal" life, just the sports.
Working in IT has allowed me to transition well into a full-time remote kind of work. Have not been to the office since March-13!!!
Like most people that are lucky to be able to keep their jobs and work from home we've adapted well and are not really looking forward to a return to normalcy in the "go to work everyday" sense of it.
To be honest, I've been much more productive since staying at home. (and I haven't wore long pants in 6 months! ;)
Season 46 update (May 2020)
Originally from Uruguay (1967) but living in the USA since 1995. In Louisville, KY for almost 20 years but now going onto 5 years in Connecticut (and liking living again near the coast!)
Married with 3 children that go from 25 to 6!
I'm a systems engineer that worked for a long time using the Uruguayan rapid application development tool called GeneXus.
A big soccer (football, fútbol) fan, mainly Nacional (Uruguay) nicknamed the Tricolores (for white, blue and red) and a pretty big club in terms of history.
Unfortunately Uruguayan football has declined quite a bit since the old glory days. (The 2010 WC being a bit of a resurgence)
Been playing Olmec football games for a very long time (over 20 years) and still is probably the online game that I enjoy the most.
And yes, not much success on it ever. I have played in at least 6 different leagues (most of them discontinued now) and never won a Div-1 title.
Maybe SESL could be the one...?
Season 41 January 2019:-
Willy Krosnyak is caretaker until end of season 41 (***Hoping to get another season~WK)
