For around 65 years United were the poor cousins in the battle for the City of Dundee's popularity. All that began to change in the 1970's, first through Jerry Kerr and latterly Jim McLean. The McLean era put the club on the map as part of the "New Firm" with Aberdeen which briefly broke the Celtic/Rangers stranglehold on Scottish football. During that period United won their first trophies, 2 League Cups at the turn of the decade before finally the league title in 1983. At that time United finished consistently in the league's top 3 and were renowned for their exploits in Europe. A number of major European giants came to the Tannadice cornershop only to leave with their tails between their legs, notably Barcelona where our record still reads played 4 won 4. This culminated in a 1984 European Cup semi and a 1987 UEFA Cup final where we narrowly lost out to Gothenburg. Despite all the accolades United still regularly underachieved, the Scottish Cup being a prime example. 7 attempts it took reaching the final before in 93 Craig Brewster's glorious tap in prevented a Rangers double treble and gave us the trophy we so desperately wanted. Lately the club has underachieved big time and despite being the 6th biggest club in Scotland we have regularly flirted with relegation.
As far SESL history goes United had been very true to life, consistently finishing well in the upper echelons of the SESL but also failing to make any sort of impression trophy wise. An SESL cup final defeat against Hibs being the closest the team had come. The natives were getting restless and were desperately seeking some sort of silverwear to adorn the Tannadice trophy cabinet.

Season 47 Update
Well it finally happened ! We completed the drop down the divisions and find ourselves in the bottom tier for the first time.
Season 48 Update
S47 review. So year 2 of rebuild was always going to be tough. At the moment the squad simply doesn't have enough depth to achieve consistent results while we try and create a solid core. The league campaign was always going to be one of consolidation and for long spells we flirted with the wooden spoon hitting rock bottom after match 38. We did improve right after though winning 4 and drawing 2 of our next six to finish comfortably in 13th. We made a 1st round exit in the CECIL Cup and did not fare much better in the SESL going out at the group stage.
S48. Still building this year and the squad while average enough lacks the strength in depth to get results any time we don't play T11. Hopefully we can progress to being a solid mid-table side flirting with the playoffs.
S49 Update
Well S48 went pretty much as expected. Mid-table was the aim and 10th was slightly under par. We did though spend most of the season flirting with the promotion play-offs and it was only a really poor run towards the end of the season that pushed us further down.
Season 50
Well another Meh season in the bag featuring more mid-table bottom division obscurity. 9th place and we never looked like troubling the the promotion chasers. We did attempt to win cup games and with the squad as it is that makes it difficult to give your all to more than one league game per session. The problem then is if you focus on the one you expect to win and don't then that can mean a number of 0 or 1 point session.
S52 Update
So the focus was to trouble the play-offs and it appears that we started with the 7th best T11. Well by season end we managed to reduce that to 15th but we managed to exceed our play off goal. We got off to a decent start in the league and spent most of the seaon swapping ROS the 1 and 2 position. We got ourselves to a point with 6 games to go in first place with a very narrow lead. UP next though were the teams with the 1st and 2nd T11 in the league. How do we negotiate the next 6 games and still give ourselves a chance of the title.
As was highlighted last season when you have a low T11 you have to pick your battles but even then you can lose the ones you expect to win. So what did we do ? Well we threw the first 2 games of the run in opting for stall with the hope of going for it in the last 4. Defeat to BER but a cheeky point against ANN meant we were 2nd with 4 to play. All out in every game now but with 2 top 5 T11's still to play that was no guarantee. We drew against DEE when we expected to win and Won against EST when we didn't, narrowly top again with 2 to play.
1st up was ROS and this was what the plan for the last 6 games had been all about. Win this one and I was fairly confident that we would at least get automatic promotion. The league was so tight though that 2 losses could see us in the play-offs. We opted for an aggressive approach which ROS couldn't match and ran out deserved 2-0 winners. So down to the last match and up against 2nd place QP, winner takes all. Unfortunately QP's 5th best T11 was too good and we lost this one dropping us down to 3rd. Disappointing but a minor miracle that a team with the 14th best T11 could come this close.
Season 53 Update
So after last seasons miracle promotion we entered the Division 2 campaign with the 14th best T11 in the Division. In that situation the main aim is clearly to avoid relegation. We started with our customary early CECIL Cup exit at the hands of GM, a 5-3 win in the 1st leg was not enough as a 2-0 defeat away saw us go out on away goals.
The usual boom or bust approach was taken and this saw some big wins (6-0, 4-0, 4-0, 5-0) countered with some big losses (0-5, 0-6, 0-5, 0-5,0-5). As we reached the half way stage though it was mission accomplished, a 7th place spot and on the coat tails of the play-off/promotion spots. Thanks for this goes to the prolific form of Paul Sturrock who scored 21 goals in the 1st 16 league games
We eased through the cup group but only got 1 more games going down 1-0 to DFA in the round of 32. The 2nd half of the season saw more of the same but a poor run of 1 win in 6 between game 39 and 47 saw us slip down to 8th and work to do in order to scrape into the play-offs. We rallied to win the last 3 but agonisingly missed out on a play-off spot on goal difference, probably just as well as we would have been to tired to compete.
Season 53 promises more of the same. We start the season with the 15th best T11 and don't have the depth to rotate to be competitive in every match. We really have to try and break the win 2 lose 1 cycle but are struggling to generate the cash to flesh out the rest of the squad.
Season 54 Update
So here we go again. As is normal these days last season was a struggle. We entered the season with the 15th best T11 in the division and no depth. After the first 12 games the size of the task was clear, only 2 wins were picked up in this period and we found ourselves rock bottom. We did get a couple of wins before the cup games but even that was pretty dismal with only 1 win from our 5 games. So out of both cups at the first stage and a long slog ahead to avoid relegation. We did start to pick up the odd win here or there but with 4 games to go we were in last chance saloon in 13th place and needing at least 3 wins. We won one and lost one of the next 2 meaning we went in to the final weekend needing to win them both. A 3-0 win at Raith and then we stole a 2-1 win from GM meant we sneaked into the play-off spot but with non existent EL. Luckily for us our opponents were in the same boat and miraculously we won to pull off the unlikeliest of escapes.
So what of season 54, well it looks like more of the same. 15th Best T11, 13th best T17 and little in the way off depth. We just can't seem to get ourselves out of this cycle and are struggling to really improve the squad. We have decided to try and add a bit more depth to end the cycle of playing T11 for 2 and then tanking and see where that takes us. I suspect a relegation battle is the best we can hope for.
Season 55
As expected last season was a major struggle, we flirted with play-off/relegation zone for most of the season. We did eventually manage to get ourselves a relegation play-off but came up short so it's back off to division 3. A sad plight for an 8 time league winner. Back to the drawing board to try and build a solid base that not only can get us promoted but also push on once we get to division 2. Maybe a time for a formation change. Have never really tried long ball in SESL, can a 5-2-3 work ? Solid defence with some major firepower up front, at least it will give us a different way to fail if it doesn't.
Season 56
Back in division 3 last season and we were where we expected to be mid-table irrelevance. We marginally outperformed our T11 but we did put some focus on increasing our OTF. Increasing this to 8 gives the team a bit of a boost that plays every game and is manageable in terms of replenishment each season. We also did make a better effort of the cups and got our selves a couple of extra games. We are in a reasonable spot this season player wise and a run at the play offs should be the goal. Automatic promotion would be difficult and I'm not sure the squad is quite ready for the step up especially as cash and resources are still very tight
I'm 49 years old and work for a well known telephone company. I'm married to Denise and have a 12 year old daughter Holly and 9 month old dog called Mickey. I currently manage teams in 2 SOS leagues Dundee United in SESL and Dundee Broncos in SFLSL. I also manage Tayside Tigers in Gridiron 3, an American Football Sim and still wile away much of my spare time playing computer games. I do try and do some real life stuff as well, I regularly attend Dundee Stars (Ice Hockey) matches and also manage to fit in a couple of 5 a side football matches per week whilst being a lapsed Tannadice season ticket holder.
I started my SESL career in season 10 with Saint Mirren. I managed a couple of promotions to the top flight but we were relegated once and in season 15 were on our way to another when I was offered the opportunity to take over at struggling 2nd Division Ross County. Out of the frying panand into the fire I managed to steer ROS away from relegation but the honeymoon period didn't last and season 16 saw a failed relegation battle.
At this point the vultures were circling over my SESL career when I got a dream opportunity. The Dundee United manager had decided to abdicate his position and after an anxious couple of weeks wait it was confirmed that I had got the job with my boyhood heroes. I'd won no trophies in the SESL and neither had United, not what you'd consider a match made in heaven but something together we'd hoped to change. My 1st season with United went even better than I could have expected, winning the The CECIL Cup against Peterhead and finishing a creditable 2nd in the league. Season 20 saw me finally achieve the ultimate goal in SESL securing the title on the last day of the season and in a nail-biting finish we saw our rivals EF NMR their last 2 games. After that I added 3 more league championships giving me 4 successive titles a feat which has only been achieved once before.
So after winning 4 titles on the trot in the next 7 seasons I only managed to add 1 solitary SESL Cup to the DUU trophy room along with a host of runners up medals. In my time with DUU we have been one of, if not the most consistent side in SESL having never finished lower than 7th and between S25 & S29 appeared in 5 consecutive SESL Cup finals. We have also had a couple of decent SOS/OLMEC cup runs with an early Final appearance and more recently a Semi-Final after losing our only decent GK in the 1st knockout match.
Season 34 Update
Since the update above success has returned and utilising the improved BC tactic I've picked up further titles in season 31 & 32 and last season managed to add championship number 7 to my resume. My tactic of focussing solely on the league at the expense of the cups continues to pay dividends despite the continually high standard of opponent in what in my opinion is still the toughest league in all of SOS. The last time we managed to record 3 championship wins in a row we managed to go on and make it 4 between season 20 & 23 so I will be hoping history repeats
Season 37 Update
I've continued to utilise BC since the update above and added a 2nd quadruple title run with 4 wins between S31 & S34. I still consider SESL to be the toughest league by a distance and most of the top managers from other leagues find their way here at one time or another. For that reason I'm immensely proud to hold the all time record for wins with 592 at present and also to hold the record for league title wins with 8.
On a personal level most of the info above still applies, I'm now 44 and daughter Holly will be 8 this year. We will be moving to a new house in Monifieth early next year, my first time living outside of the city of Dundee. I'm also having to give up my season ticket at Tannadice for the 1st time in many years. No, not due to relegation but due to some rota changes at work restricting my free Saturday afternoons. I will more than likely still punish myself with a visit whenever I do get a free Saturday though.
Season 46 Update
Nothing much changes, still living in Monifieth, still working for BT but with an almost 12 year old, YouTube, Tik Tok, Social media addict. Currently working from home as I assume most are and to be honest I quite like it. Missing my Fives and Badminton, thank god for being able to get out for a bit of a cycle. With any luck over the next week or 2 I can get back to my scenic 22 mile round trip from Monifieth to Arbroath. Hoping to return to Tannadice at some point next season when we mix it with the big boys again
Season 47
Really only 1 major change to add from Season 46 update all of which still applies. We got a dog, a black Lab going by the name of Mickey. Daughter has been begging for a pet for a while and a cat was a no no. I had a couple of dogs when I was young, we'll get one of them easy peasy. Well let me stop you right there. First of all with this Covid crisis actually finding one available was a nightmare, Also I don't remember any of the sleepless nights that a new puppy brings. Getting up every couple of hours for him to pee was a shock to the system. As loveable as he is he isn't half a bitey little bugger, apparently all labs start off like that. It's fair to say he is getting better as long as you don't present your fingers to him and he is now sleeping for a good 6 or 7 hours. Another couple of months and i'm sure he will be mans best friend.
Season 48
Still with BT. Check
Still living in Monifieth. Check
Still have a daughter. Check
Still working from home. Check
Dog growing up. Check
Theres not really much to update this year as feck all is actually happening. Lets hope we are nearing the end and can get back to some sort of normality soon. I must admit i do like working from home and hope to be able to continue to some degree when restrctions are lifted. The 30 second commute and extra half hour in bed swing it for me. The dog is better now doing puppy stuff although he still likes an early rise. Better weather and lights nights mean so overdue exercise is round the corner with a bit of cycling and tennis on the horizon.
Season 49
Genuinely got nothing this year. Dog is now 1 and has calmed down a little. Work is still from home and have no real desire to return any time soon. Playing some Tennis, Badminton and doing a bit of cycling. Not sure what is happening with 5's, am 49 now anyway and after a year and a half out, will I still manage or is my career over ?
Season 50
Ok what to add ? Well 5's is back and pleased to say the body is still coping ... just. Think I'm about a stone heavier that when we played last but let's get Christmas out the way and we can start making some inroads. Nothing much else has changed but I have a couple of Deacon Blue concerts scheduled over the next couple of weeks. Lets hope we don't get any sudden announcements to spoil that.
Season 52
What is new. Well been back in the office currently doing 20% of our days and the rest at home but the company now want us to gradually get up to 65%. Lot of not happy people and i am personally much happier working on my own at home.
Not going to let that worry me to much at the moment though as we are off to Florida in a couple of weeks for 3 whole weeks. This holiday has been a long time coming !!. We managed to catch Covid at a concert in Glasgow a few months back so glad catching it is not a big worry as the days count down. Both the wife and myself got it, just like a normal cold really.
Sport wise now into my 50's but still going strong at 5's and with the nights drawing in the bike and Tennis raquet are off to storage with the Badminton raquet taking over.
Season 53 Update
As usual i have very little to update, I'm afraid my life is not exciting enough to warrant a 6 monthly update.
Florida holiday was great as always but very busy and a lot more expensive than in previous years. It was very much a lighter than normal suitcase than we normally return with. As mentioned in the last update we are back in the office 65% of the time. Not overly happy but it's not likely to change so just need to get on with it.
Cousin has decided she wants to go and watch Dundee United regularly so have had to re-engage after a few seasons with only the odd appearance. We didn't exactly pick the best season to return as a relegation slog is upon us. Last nights transfer window dealings did nothing to lighten the mood. I still work a couple of Saturdays a month so at least I don't need to endure it every week.
I've also become addicted to Football Manager again after many years away, i played 2015 a bit on iPad but before that FM2007 was my go to and hadn't played seriously after the introduction of the 3D match engine.
Season 54
Whilst SESL DUU pulled off an unlikely escape from relegation the same could not be said of our real life counterparts. We went in to the last 5 games split with real hope after 3 consecutive wins but then proceeded to lose all 5. I went to our 2nd last game against Ross County where, as had been the case all season, the defeat was self inflicted due to defensive and goal keeping errors. So back to the championship for us where last time it took 4 years to escape. Not to worry though as our chairmen assured us in March that it wasn't a problem, "We won't go down but if we do we will come straight back up". Weekend working means a season ticket is out of the question but i will take in a few.
Season 55
Well real life DUU have started the season with a bang. 17 games undefeated and scoring goals for fun. Top of the league but haven't yet managed to shake off Raith Rovers. Maybe the owner was right when he said we'd come straight back up. Have managed to make a few games and will try to take in as many as I can in the 2nd half of the season.
On the domestic front we have a new addition to the family. A new puppy, a little sister for Mickey. For the first week or so he was hating it and us I think but he has come round since. I must admit it seems a lot easier this time, when we got Mickey it was a total culture shock.
Season 56
In real life DUU continue to hang on to top spot in the championship but still we can't shake RR and our form of late has not been great. If we do go on to win the league we will probably stumble over the line and it will have more to do with the quality of the rest of the league.
The new puppy is now 9 months old and has now been fully accepted as part of the family.
Still managing to play 5's weekly and I've started playing tennis more regularly with the odd game of badminton thrown in.
