Well our SESL Cup Campaign is over after a terrible group stage. It was never going to be easy with three D1 teams in our group but there was hope of snagging that 4th spot if we could get wins against D3 strugglers QOS and D2 Nairn in our first two games.
In our first game against QOS (the 5th time we've played them this season!) we sent out a strong lineup to get a vital win but even though we had double the shot chance they doubled our shot count 4-2 and with two good goalies it ended up 0-0 for our only points of the group stage. It just went downhill from there. Without a deep roster we couldn't send out as good a lineup against Nairn and lost 2-0. All was not lost but it wasn't looking good.
After a 4-0 loss to Inverness we had a make or break game against Albion Rovers. This game was a potential season ender if it had happened in the league so in some ways it's good it was the cup. But it was a complete disaster. We started by losing star 2/30 striker Jarome Iginla in the 5th minute to torn ligaments. But our lads recovered from the terrible scenes and were keeping it close and still in it at 1-2 until a straight red to our goalie in the 58th minute brought in our apprentice Mike Zunino and took off a FW just two minutes before we switched to press. That meant that as we pushed forward Albion would have chances against the rookie and while we were able to get 1 more goal while pressing ALB put 4 more past Zunino to win 2-6. In addition to the injury and the straight red we had to two more bookings that resulted in another two suspensions. We barely had enough players to field a lineup against Hearts in our last game that we only lost 0-1 due to Hearts resting loads of players.
Anyway, we start off the return to league with two players still suspended and Iginla still recovering. Hopefully we got all our bad luck out of the way in the SESL group and can make a push for the playoffs as we are only 1 point out at the moment with the second half of the season starting up.
