Season 44 Update:
Season 43 was miserable. No cup runs, as usual, so that went as expected but the success or failure of the season was down to Division 1 survival and we failed to deliver that and did it in style. Relegation seemed to be nailed on early in the league campaign and time and time again we blew critical games against fellow relegation strugglers. So we need to put that disappointment firmly behind us and look forward to hopefully being a little more competitive this season.
Pretty much the last of our old promoted season guard depart with Colin Bell; Phillip Matthews; Jim Murray; Conor Hagan; Billy Totten; Gerry Gow and Tom Brady all moving on from Lisburn and indeed football. Apart from Gerry Gow who never really produced the goods they move on with our thanks and best wishes.
Joining the squad via the draft this season are defenders Gary Wray and Dave Watson and keeper Scott Carson. All will need to settle in quickly and get up to competitive speed quickly as we don’t have much room for passengers this season.
As we enter Season 44, T11 is poorer than we would have wanted but hopefully adequate and we need to find a way to sort that out pronto. T17 is a bit healthier and we will need to again lean into that this season, if we have any chance of making a fist of the Div 2 race to promotion. As ever we will have to rely on bargain basement additions during the season to strengthen both the T11 and the T17 as funds are thin on the ground.
Survival in the second division is nailed on, so the board have set the club the target of a cup run to a semi-final and a play-off position in the league. Now we have a younger squad the board have tasked the management with the target of securing a Division 1 standard T11 and T17, so we will be looking for some deals in the auctions and hoping to pick up some reasonably priced CP and TP.
Season 44 Update:
Hello again fellow SFLSL managers!
I’m well into my 60th year and looking down the barrel of me bus pass, which will arrive before Season 44 is concluded. I’m still married to that long suffering, front-line nurse, Karen, who has the paperwork in to retire in August after 41 years on the wards. We plan on the short term to head to Tenerife in September and after that we don’t have a solid plan yet but plan to plan a plan, to avoid falling into a rut of just existing. A bit of gardening is a front runner and the boss fancies a crafting course or three but nothing is landed on yet.
My three sons continue to enjoy their lot and I’m still the looker-afterer of my three fantastic grand-daughters, Emma; Jessica and Isabella. Following Jessica’s autism diagnosis she is thriving now since her dedicated classroom assistant was appointed. Isabella has gone into P2 and announced she has trimmed back to just one boyfriend and Emma has become the dreaded teenager before her time but memory tells me they eventually work their way through it and return to the pleasantries of family membership.
Last week City brought their current 5 trophies to Northern Ireland and I popped along for my annual trophies pic and had the pleasure to meet Alex Williams and Gary Owen again and met a rather shy Stevie Lomas for the first time.
It’s time my Raiders started to provide a bit of at least hope but we are still very light. The defence, or is it d-fence, is starting to click but offensively we remain lacking, particularly in the QB department. So a bold move to trade-up in the draft could be on the cards but time is running out for Davante Adams and a rookie QB is always a poke in the dark. Sadly my expectations remain low and I’m digging in for another tough season.
The Blue Jays stumbled their way to the post season and player for player, out and in, we don’t seem to have strengthened, so some young pretenders need to hit the heights they have been promising to.
Enjoy your season everyone. We, at Lisburn City, are in transition …………………….. again, so, as ever, please be gentle. 😜
