The final weekend of the league season saw the Broncos comfortably placed, 6th in the table.  There was no prospect of finishing higher than that, but we could drop to 8th if things went badly.

Our opponents were Sheffield Rovers, second in the table and keen to win as they still had a chance to be champions.  They held a small shot advantage but we took the lead after 26 minutes when a mishit shot from Nicholas Nokota landed at the feet of Norman Namib for a simple side-foot home.  The lead lasted only four minutes, however, and so we arrived at half time with the match tied up at 1-1.  The second half was a close affair, and it looked as if the match would finish 1-1 but with eleven minutes to go, the Bulldogs found a winner to keep themselves in with a chance of the title, while dropping us to seventh place.

And so to the final match one Sunday, a visit to Newton Heath LYR.  Les Lithgoe had his eye on the unavoidable playoff match and so we benefitted here from him sensibly resting some key players.  The result was a very one-sided affair.  We scored twice in the first two minutes and it was 0-4 eleven minutes in.  The score at half time was 0-5 and there it stayed.  A comfortable win to end the season, and we are very pleased to have finished sixth.

Great Run

The Broncos’ recent form has been excellent and this continued last weekend, when we notched up two more wins which mean we have scored 22 points from our last eight matches.

On Saturday we were at home to New Jersey Nutmegs, who were struggling near the foot of the table.  It only took us two minutes to take the lead, our novice forward, Ian Ytene, scoring via a deflection.  We had the better of things throughout the first half without managing to score, but early in the second half we made it 2-0 via a tap-in from Norman Namib.  We hoped to go on to claim a captain’s bonus, but the Nutmegs pulled a goal back on 77 minutes and we had to be content with the three points.

Sunday’s match was a visit to the bottom club, The New Saints, and again we had rather the better of things.  The only goal of the first half went to us in the 29th minute, a firm header from Mohammed Mustang.  In the second half our opponents managed an equalised but with eleven minutes left it was Mustang again with a nice chip to give us the win.

We now lie 6th in the table, and will finish 6th, 7th or 8th.  That seems to be about our mark, or can we make it into the top five next season?
