We have had the luck of having the top two sides facing each other in 3 out of 4 leagues in the last 3 weeks of the season:

-A week ago, REB defeated GBS to put themselves 4 points ahead of GBS, allowing them to secure the division 4 title yesterday. Congrats, Steve!

-This past weekend, CDY beat MTS for the THIRD time this season, vaulting them into the lead in division 3, meaning that a win against LHT next weekend will secure the division 3 title. Talk about big performances from Jason and his side!

-This weekend, HOU will host CAR for the title - a win or draw for the home side will ensure that HOU get to celebrate the title on their home pitch, whereas an away victory will ensure the title for CAR. I believe either way will be a first Div. 1 title for either club, so it should be an exciting view.

Also worth noting that the Div. 2 title may well come down to goal difference this weekend, as well. Should be an exciting final weekend!

Great suggestion, David. I would be happy to consider further adjustments to team names within reason over the league break. Senior sides would of course need to stick to current/recent MLS, USL, or NASL teams. Some of our current crop still exist in the USL (e.g. Charleston Battery), whereas others have since folded (e.g. Atlanta Silverbacks, Chivas USA)

When I join games I spend as much time going through the variious teams available for their names. I want to associate myself with my "lads". Now, D.C. Utd might grow on me in time, but if anybody out there covets my team and would consider a change, I am more than willing to consider a swap at the season end.

Also I notice the change of name which has brought Inter Miami and Fort Lauderdale - bringing OASL a bit closer to real life - any plans to alter any more names of current clubs? A Poll??

A personal observation, the spacing of the aucitons seems to be better, but with shorter sesaons and therefore a need to spend more on CP/TP slots, cash balances remain low for the first half of the season, making auctions perhaps less competitive. I will look into options that include either pushing the auctions a week or two later into the season or perhaps other ways of balancing cashflows.

Just a reminder on retirements. I will try to get the wiki updated early this season so that it better reflects what we've been doing the past few seasons for retirements. Mark - see below as I think your blog post hints at expecting the old old system for OASL retirements.

All - Many rosters are at maximum player counts + maximum numbers of MPPs. Before next Sunday's auction (May 26th) we are going to incentivize retirements as below (Payout before next Sunday's auction, and then again a week later if anyone misses the deadline):

• Players SL <= 12 will pay out 50k
• Players SL >= 13 will pay out 100k

Note that this will apply retroactively to players already retired this season so that nobody is punished for having already retired players. Since players SL >= 13 cannot be retired yourself, please post in the blog here (Or via inbox) any players that you wish to retire but cannot do yourself. This is also a good time to request MPPs get downgraded to single position if you wish to free up a slot for auction bidding. Also remember that you may not retiire to a roster size below 18 players.

Thanks for the full house for Match 1! I appreciate everyone's help getting preseason finished and the season started.

Schedules for the rest of the group stage have been added, and I have also re-created the league schedules to fix a bug where INT were showing up with the wrong team logo and name on the scoreboards. Match 2 should be the last time we see that bug.

Auctions have also been populated. Taking into account your feedback, all Auctions are now spaced apart by 2 weeks and we will have one fewer auction than last season. I will also run player cash-ins before each of the four auctions, as well as calling for any downgrades of MPPs needed.

We are set to go with season kickoff on Sunday evening. I'll be adding the last few missing fixtures and new youth players around then, as well. First youth match will be matchday 7, so I will announce once all sides are updated (hopefully that's this weekend)

I have allowed youth sides that had leftover CP from the previous season to keep up to 5 each of the past few seasons. So, a youth side could start with up to 10 (5 new + 5 rollover). But, none should be purchased.

I have done this as I see little advantage in not using your CP one season and saving for the next. It allows for new managers to start off with a decent catch-up option should they be taking over a neglected club. However, I am happy to consider a different option for next season if we would like to make proposals.

And a RL note: I went to Foxboro to see New England Revolution play Inter Miami a couple of years ago, there was no large croud and tickets were very cheap!

I went to see them last week and the tickets were outrageously expensive and the croud was huge!!

But it was worth it!  Messi was great and Suarez came in and scored a beauty!  :)

So, back to OASL, look for youngsters Messi and Suarez spend a season with the Jr team...!

I can look into it, Steve. Probably can bump the settings up to be similar to other leagues now, and then can poll further changes at the end of the season. But I'll look at the numbers here in the coming days

A bit of History: back in the day there was only MSWL (well there might have been others but OASL comes from MSWL) and when SESL started season 16 it joined the new server. SFLSL and OASL joined later. For those that don't know, Al asked me to set up ODFL as a test bed for new ideas and for new players to try out the game. I got Dave Dowson to help run ODFL and he took over completely when life got in my way. I dropped out of all but MSWL but that stopped as Al concentrated on United.

To have a game on the Olmec server meant you used the same game engine (apart from an addition per league) and tactics formula. FW OFF for Loingball used to be 1.5 but was reduced to 1.25  (Feb 2006) as it was deemed too effective. WG OFF for Early Cross was later (Dec 2008) reduced from 1.75 to 1.6 for the same reason.

While I was away from the game Dave changed ODFL to OASL and a new ODFL started up. He also introduced the Youth League. And Commishes were given the power to alter the tactical formula.

SFLSL has always kept the "default" formula.

SESL changed a little: WG is back at 1.75 for EC, OTF for C has increased and BC has changed a lot, increased OFF and DEF from OTF and decreased DEF from DF.

OASL also changed a lot and after David Blair took over he altered some (BC was was too powerful). However there are still a lot of differences (comparing to SFLSL):

Stall: GP is increased, DEF for DF and MF increased, OTF decreased. OFF for MF and WG decreased

Early Cross: WG back to 1.75

Ball Control: WG reduced from 1.25 to 1.0 and OTF reduced from 1.5 to 1.25 - both for OFF. Nothing increased so it's even weaker than in SFLSL.

Ball Control isn't the best tactic as it is - the extra OFF/DEF you get from OTF has little impact in a high SL league and doesn't make up for the lower GP you get from SW and DF. In the Youth league it could be better with lower SLs but OTF is fixed at 1.

Even in SESL it is generally weaker than the other tactics, only getting close with a 5 to 2 MF advantage. I use it because with OTF giving more and DF less, marking doesn't hurt as much when you mark.

(When marking a player loses all GP, DEF and OFF - in SESL these add up to 1.0, and he takes 1.0 or more off the marked player. In the other leagues he loses 1.25. When playing something like N a marking DF loses 1.75 or 1.8 making it very unattractive).

Can we at least have BC numbers set to the same as SFLSL. If I ever decide to play BC (I wanted to in the Dave Dowson shield) it is likely to be 5-5-2 with a strong WG.
