If you bid for multiple players in an auction but only want to win one of them, you can give them the same name in your bids. This way, if you win the first one on the list, your next bid will be invalidated for having the same name as a player already on your roster (since the first bid player has already been added to your roster)

Week 9 turned out - expectably - rather boring.
Most of the Div1 squads finished the SESL group stage well rested, so not much need to play the B-team, let alone a junk squad.

Nonetheless ARB retake the lead - alongside NAI.
#3 remains unmentioned.
Everyone else may find his team. Especially DEE is always easy to find.

Not much news: just a very tight race for the bottom - and a solid top 2.

Overall week #9 showed up with solid 64.9%, only the starting week was higher at 68.3%.

I'm expecting much more junk in week #10.

Have just noticed that ANN have 8 points in 6 matches against the top 4 (2-2-2), and then 6 points total against the rest (1 win, 3 draws, 8 losses). Dan certainly making his mark on the title race,  both during and after his big CECIL cup push. Bad omen for MOT on Saturday!

English school holidays just starting -but Scottish pupils - the 6 that actually attend school - go back in about 2 weeks. Never noticed they were off except Greggs was more quieter than usual and anyway most stay indoors to be able to keep up to date with their social media. 
One good thing about being 106 (that's how I feel) is that we don't have school kids at home.. 👍👍👍

After the excitement of playing Willy 4 times last Wednesday today seems like an anti-climax.

No SESL Cup today for anyone.

In Sanc it's the Dowson shield only as they play a 3 way round robin.

In OASL my senior team's win means straight to the final (it's a double elimination  competition)

It's only the Junior team that has a game.

Did it actually 2 seasons in a row.    Played earlier in the season before retiring.    0/10 superstar upgrade.    Gk is always the postions to go on these if I ever get another one.

For us lads with nothing to do till this weekend having been dumped out of the SESL Cup, having a discussion and a poll does fill up 3 minutes, so thanks for that.

Steve's point about the GK award has now gone to a Poll (30 seconds) - get in there and give your view.

And I heard a plea for the POTS to be brought back in - up to Mark of course (but it was my suggestion and I collected the data - like the idea it should go on youth - if after PSA (isn't that the heading for blood readings during prostate cancer - in fact I KNOW it is) it could go onto age 1 players - additions are done before 1st game in the new season, so unlikely to be any age 0s. Exciting - that's my 3 minutes up now. 🤔🤔😉😉

what ever happened to GK Gracie at ALB,
the golden glove winner that one season rating went over 99.9 and disappeared from stats!

I would be highly against removing this award.  Mainly cos I usually win it.   Although not this year unless Kittle get his act in to gear.

If the award is unfair, why not just remove it?  I'm sure an alternative award could be found if we really need one.

Tricky altering a statistic award that will show on the web pages in table of stats - but be awarded using a different criteria.

After 59 seasons stats kinda set in stone.  But I understand reasoning to wish a change to make it "fairer".

Seconded. I'm not too fussed on what metric would be used, as long as it isn't so tied to # of shots faced. So, save percentage seems decent enough.

Also, I think it would be easy enough to pay someone 50 or 100k to spend 20 minutes grabbing all the league save %s.

The present formula is rubbish and I drew attention to it last season by exploiting it. Don't worry I won't do that again.

But it favours teams with good keepers but rubbish defence. Can we simply have it as save% with perhaps a minimum number of minutes played. These are easy to check.

And rather than Commish having to go through all 48 teams we put forward our own players on the Notebook.

Overall one of the best bargain auctions I've seen in some time. Almost all of the purchases seem to be decent deals, and plenty of time left in the season.

There were 23 entries in a low-scoring round.  The average score was 3.8, assisted by a magnificent 0 by Mr.Blair.

There were two draws, always difficult to predict, and Berwick's win against Dunfermline (the most popular banker choice) was only predicted by three managers.  Two managers managed to score six points, so congratulations to John at Livingston and Cameron at Arbroath who each earn 50k for their club.

Cowdenbeath have opened up a little gap at the top, and will take a bit of catching now.  The next round will be crictical as it's the Cup round, which can't be dropped from the final scores.  This will happen on August 13th and I'll post on the notebook when the draw is known.

The team badges at the top of the page also shows ABE(Div3) on the Div 2 line while GM(Div 2) are showing on the Div 3 line.

Although the league tables are showing GM in Division 2 and their schedule shows correct matches, the stats show them as in Division 3.

GM page shows GM are in Div 3 - incorrect. A simple fix for the Commish.

The team with one entry in was me, and it was deliberate as I knew I would be in the house at 4pm - allowing me an hour to put in the 2nd one. Any injury in the 1st match can be altered by me instead of the computer, and any upcoming suspension means I will play the lad in game 2 so he can gain a full set of ELs when sitting out next weekend. 

We all have our own way of working and that is the way it should be. I don't do it every week that way - in fact next Saturday I will be on a cruise ship so both will be in before Saturday morning.

And I don't listen to lads who say the site might be down or wifi etc etc - the worst that could happen is I go NMR and the computer will improvise - and at the moment likely to do a better job than me. :-(

I thought every one clicked "review orders" when they had finished entering lineups to make sure they had saved.

STI never had a tick against it in match schedule on front page that shows pre match comments this morning.

Energy Level perhaps a factor in trade? 

Half of BER starting 11 is on around 2, 3 or 4 EL.  And a 2/23 DM on 0 (zero) EL.

Squad numbers increased by 1 at BER too.

After oldies cash-in, now 30 (thirty) teams in Sesl have 19 players or less.  When suspensions of 2 or 3 matches kick in later in season roster size may be a crucial factor for some.

Both managers have plenty of experience and I'm sure will see it as a fair deal.

On the value of the trade - no.

On the point of the trade? I think Derek would have been better keeping the CP and using 11 on his DF and DM taking them both to 30. The players he got aren't going to stop him getting the wooden spoon or be any use next season.

John at LIV has hit on something I love the idea of. Wins vs your rivals means more. Should it be cash (I like ks for every player on a or d - I'd say started with rather than finished but it still open to abuse) or should it be an increase in the Morale boost for a win? 

Fwiw PET have 3 main rivals. FAL and their ex manager Rhys Brisenden and main played Sherry Debbins are still sing about on the stands, and the other two being ARB (Dave Campbells old team, a classic rival and he knows why) and Killie, which is legacy for us and historically ran by Mark until that bloody Dave guy took over (childhood fan my arse) and if I was ever tempted to unrival them that went to pot when he took over. 

Eduard, my sincere apologies for refering to your lineup as 'junk'. I meant dross.

I am not sure if this was the worst DEE lineup of the season but it is surely in the top two.

Perhaps this was in an effort to get DUM up the charts*. If so, thank you!

With the SESL group stage ahead, not much junk news this week - but Dumbarton rising fast.

NAI defend their top spot - only just.
DUM are serious contenders now, even if not everything is as junky as they think.
3 teams trailing with 4 junk.

Not much news here - besides DUM's major rise.
It's now a two horse race between ARB and DUM - only 0.7 between them.
At the bottom the well-known three keep their distance to the rest.

No interesting JOTW this week, but a non-junk deserves mention:
DUM vs DEE 73/52 1-1
Colin himself called this junk, I didn't.
DEE's 52% are well within junk range, but their SL39 GK certainly was not.
So - using the previous definitions - DEE's lineup was just not junky enough to be junk.
DUM should be quite content with their faced lineups, nonetheless.

1. Edinburgh's Eternal Sulk
Hibernian (3rd in Div 1) and Edinburgh City (8th in Div 2) continue their bitter feud over who really owns the capital. Hibs claim history, City claims the tram route. Hibs fans argue they’re in Division 1 for a reason; City fans retort: “That’s just because you can’t get promoted from it.”

2. The Dundee Derby: Neighbours, Enemies, Queue Partners
Dundee FC (3rd, Div 1) and Dundee United (10th, Div 2) live closer than most married couples, yet share less than the average estranged in-laws. Dundee United fans bring up ancient glories; Dundee FC fans say, “Scoreboard.” The real winner is the kebab shop on Tannadice Street.

3. Glasgow’s Identity Crisis
Ah yes, Rangers (9th, Div 2) and Celtic (14th, Div 2) — the Old Firm, now the Old Frail. Both languish in Division 2 mid-table purgatory like two pensioners arguing over whose grandkids are more disappointing. At this point, even Queen’s Park (8th, Div 3) might beat them — and politely too.

4. The Fife Fisticuffs
East Fife (11th, Div 1), Cowdenbeath (7th, Div 2), and Raith Rovers (6th, Div 2) all share a postcode and a grudge. They’re locked in a triangular standoff, where no one remembers why they hate each other, but they’re committed to it. The derby is known locally as “The Kingdom Clash,” or more informally, “That Game Where It Always Rains.”

5. Highland Hostility
Nairn County (14th, Div 1) vs. Elgin City (5th, Div 1) vs. Inverness (14th, Div 3) — the Highland Triangle. Elgin boasts goals galore, while Nairn claims they have the better pub. Inverness insists the weather is a form of tactical advantage. Nobody watches the games — the wind carries the ball away.

6. Motherwell vs. Everyone
Motherwell (top of Div 1) are currently too good for beef. But rest assured, everyone below them collectively hates their smug goal difference and suspiciously consistent form. Fraserburgh (2nd) are quietly plotting revenge involving a foghorn and a dodgy penalty decision.

Honourable Mention: The Sad Ayrshire Derby
Ayr United (rock bottom of Div 2) and Kilmarnock (12th) are locked in a downward spiral of shared disappointment. Kilmarnock wins the derbies, but Ayr wins at bingo night. Everyone else wins by not watching.

Passive/aggressive keepers:

I know Colin didn't ask a question but here's an answer. I picked a game at random - ARB vs EST and worked out how ARB's shot chance would alter depending on EST's GK.  At the start of the game it was 12%. EST playing aggressive GK would only reduce this to 11.4% and passive 12.5%. If they had that mythical 3/38 GK it would be 11% and 12.8%. 

So you give up half/one extra shot (on average) to be able to play him 80% of the games rather than 66%. Or you stop an extra half/one shot playing him 50% of the time and risking a red card and penalty.

Colin's little remark about Rangers and Division 3. I kinda agree, but not so much as what was paid as both teams increased their 17th player by quite a lot of SL. Also Cove had 6 attackers and Steve likes to play 4 up front. Having a 7th makes sense for cover. But an SL 17 FW is not all that great really  with about a 12% chance of scoring against an SL 27 GK taking into account offsides and being on target. I'll be marking the life out of him when we play because he's bound to score a hat-trick against us otherwise. Having said that, Cove are going to get promoted and Steve is doing a great job there.

Press vs Early Cross:

In the ALB vs EST massacre I noticed ALB changed to Press but their shot chance went down. You'd expect it to go up. The problem was as EST were playing Opportunistic, ALB had a bonus from the DFs. This meant no increase in OFF there. Also WG OFF dropped from 1.95 to 1.45 while MF OFF increased from 0.5 to 1.0 As the WGs were higher SL than the MFs this means a drop in OFF over all.

2:1 and forced repositions:

ALB were playing 1-3-2-4 and had a MF sent off. This forced a DF to move up to MF 1-2-2-4. Later on they had a DF sent off so had just one DF. Tebow had to move back to DF, but that meant one MF so he moved back to MF 1-1-2-4. Unfortunately with just an SL 12 DF, 2:1 reduced MF from 38 to 24 and thus FW from 71 to 48. And playing Press. No wonder they got slaughtered.

Rivals:

Some of you will know that my teams played Willy's teams 4 times in cup games on Wednesday. The chances of this happening must be very low as the teams would have to be drawn together (or apart as one was the 3rd or 4th round) and Cup games scheduled that day. Next week there is no cup on Wednesday, the other leagues often have league games on Wednesday.

Anyway in memory of this I've changed all my rivals to Willy's teams in all 4 leagues.

Actually I thought it was a good step for SESL (Iasl uses a system too) allowing managers to cash in for retiring older players. We all need to be aware of the values as we claim the cash from Mark. 💰💰

My eye brow may have been briefly raised while sipping my beer, but then I spotted the same team sold for 4TP a now 5/15 (was 5/20 FW earlier in season).

The scheme to get cash for retiring a player has been with us for a number of seasons now and I was wondering if anyone actually uses the scale to value old dross?

The scale is - IMO - PITS. It's a made up number that does not reflect the true value of old guys that previously just wasted away.

I get why you would play your GK passive. Saves EL. Dropping just 1 EL every game instead of 2. Yip. Makes sense.

The loss in GP? Well, if your GK is 3/38 (no idea why that random number popped into my head) then, perhaps, you don't care how many extra shots the opposition get as your man will likely save them all - or one anyway.

So, conversely, why would you play 9 dirty or 5 aggresive and leave the GK on normal. Not a real a question, just in my wee head.

An aggressive GK adds 25% of his SL to GP.

Anyway, I watched the ALB v EST game on the viewer, even though I knew the score. Min 90 was well worth the wait. Cracker.

Last time I looked Hibs and Ayr United were in 4th and 5th place in their group. They have exactly the same points, goal difference, and same number of goals scored. They drew their match against each other 0-0. If both teams end exactly the same after Wednesday will the same happen - seems to be a random position as normally alphabetical would be the way. Hibs would go through and Ayr not - think I would be aggrieved if that happened and I was manager of Ayr. However unlikely it will after 4pm tomorrow. :-)

That is the holy grail - 35 CP pre-season

Plan is not to fail that again this season.   

However there is a UT player begging for CP this season.

In the past I would only ever buy 35 CP pre-season because 40 CP costs 500k more. I'd rather keep the money then bid 100k/CP in auctions and maybe get some cheap.

But CP prices being what they are I tend to buy what I can afford now. That being said I did want CP recently so did make sure it didn't go too cheap knowing I could probably get back what I paid.

Looks set to catch more than a few managers out. Let's hope the orders flood in today.

Nothing much to say this week as the blog has not been hitting the heights of two weeks ago. In fact, I note that some guys are just copying from my blog/journal posts and then adding something along the lines of - no comment. There is not much* participation there and I watch with interest how much a blog like that scores on the PB scale.

I think MOT were 2nd placed four times in the resources auction 6.

Steve at ALO is another who tactically bids some times just to make sure resources don't go too cheap, so hats off to him.

Age 0 players may go for a bit less as each auction progresses and less matches left to get the 10 PU added.

Has the day of 1k auction wins a thing of the past now?

Hearts standing in the way of MOT getting a great deal on the player they needed. Pushed us up just over what I would consider the average expected price for an 0/8 WG. Expected to pay about that given the lack of apprentice WGs so far in auctions, but always tough knowing you were one Dave S vacation week away from getting a steal! Part of why Dave is such a top manager and why I would need to win... 268 out of my next 294 matches to equal his career record 😵‍💫

Been waiting to get my revenge a long time

Looks like all the teams on 9 points out of 9 have qualified for the next round already.

The math is simple for DEE, FRA, PT, MOT, and ALO. For STJ and SRA, the schedule works in their favor, as while 4 teams below them could all pass these two, not all four could pass them together due to matches against each other.

7 teams already qualified after 3 matches seems a pretty large number. But, perhaps my memory fails me here and this is normal. Will be most interesting looking at the standings with 1 match to go after tomorrow's fixtures

Last took place in Season 53. EST won 7-4. its that kind of game. 

This is our first SESL Cup meeting since season 50 which ALB won. 

Pretty Straight Forward. Fans needed the ying to ALB's Yang. Like the force vs. the dark side.

Rumour has it that EST played all dirty in a game against ALB injuring two of their players, knocking them out for the rest of the season.

Either that or they support rival teams that aren't that good anyway.

I suspect the CP value may rise further nearer end of season if managers get desperate to hit 30 or 35 SL's.

So I had 17 CP at MSA, which was planned as I had just 19 guaranteed games left. I never assume I'll qualify for the knockout stages and like to have the last weekend free in case of suspensions. I decided we could use 23 CP: 15 on Howarth and Reid to take them to 25, and 8 on Williams and Graham to take them to 30. 6 CP needed assuming we lost to Berwick on Wednesday.

I bid 110k per CP for lots of 9, 8, 8 and 7 CP and 840k for the last 7 CP. The first bids were so it didn't go too cheap. Andy made sure we paid the full 990k (the second time this season we bid 1k below me) for the 9 CP but I got the first 7 CP the knock down price of 756k. 

Colin immediately offered me 330k for 3 CP (that's when I realised we'd won a few) and I worked out what to do. I accepted the offer and decided that I could use 2 CP on my GK, as well as the aforementioned 23. After the MVP on Wednesday I decided to sell the unwanted 6 CP. I thought a little profit was OK and Kev bought them an 120k each. Only 70k profit. If they didn't go then I'd save them for next season. 

Then I realised I still had one spare - it took ages to work out why - Williams already had 8 PU so could only get to 29. I only needed 4 in the first place (not counting the 2 on my GK). I let Kev have that for 110k - can't be seen to be taking too much of an advantage.

In the end it worked out well. 16 CP bought for 1746k. 10 sold for 1160, so the 6 cost me 584k, which pleases me. Maybe not so old after all.

Understandably all SESL managers are selling any player they can afford to,in order to get in funds. SESL is a constant battle of not having enough funds to execute the plans we want.

What a pitty we dont have ladies teams to sell to our owners the way Chelsea and now Aston Villa are in order to meet their financial fair play requirements.

In a rival offer SRA have now put on the market 4TP at the bargain discounted rate of $150k. "The market is booming" said one Coach as demand far outstrips supply 3 to 1. Stranraer Boss McCumiskey commented that the Blues TPs are top quality which just cannot be matched by any found in the Captial.
